The Core Information Standard defines a set of information that can potentially be shared between systems in different sites and settings, among professionals and people using services.
The standard aligns with many other published PRSB standards including maternity, healthy child and the community pharmacy standard. The standard also includes updates from the social care programme such as vital About me content – the information a person wants to share with health and care professionals.
We are working closely with the NHS Digital interoperability team to align V2.0 to the UK core R4 FHIR profiles. This is in progress and with work completed on many areas such as person demographics, allergies and adverse reactions, medications and medical devices.
Implementing the standard – Minimum viability information
PRSB information standards define best practice based on evidence and widescale consultation and input from users and stakeholders. PRSB recognises that the NHS and social care are on a journey towards standardisation and interoperability and our aim is to support and encourage implementers on that journey. For this reason we have defined and clinically validated a ‘Minimum Viable Information Standard (MVIS)’ that represents the minimum needed for a safe instance of each standard and delivers the intended objectives within the spirit of the standard. The MVIS defines the data items and business rules which must be implemented in order to have achieved this minimum level. It is our aim that implementers will continue to improve their implementation of the standard over time and strive for a ‘best practice’ implementation, supported and evidenced by PRSB conformance testing. Provenance data
Provenance data for this standard will be shown in a separate information model in the next iteration of the standard following its 3-year maintenance release. Provenance data describes who made the record entry or carried out the activity, where and when. The latest provenance model is available on our website.
Using the standard in five community settings: pharmacy, optometry, dentistry, ambulance and community services
PRSB has extended the use of the Core Information Standard for shared care records to professionals working in pharmacy, optometry, dentistry, ambulance and community services, following widespread consultation with clinicians, people using these services and a range of PRSB stakeholders.
This will ensure that professionals working in these care settings have access to the right information at the right time to provide clinically safe and effective care, subject to appropriate information governance controls. Using the standard in these settings should improve care and outcomes for people, and it should improve the working lives of professionals who won’t need to create workarounds or log into multiple systems to ensure they have a complete picture of a person’s current and relevant care history, before starting treatment.
