Digital Maternity Record Standard - release 2

We’re working with the NHS to improve how information about health and maternity care is recorded and shared during pregnancy and following birth.

I am a person who has recently used maternity services

I am a professional working in or with maternity services

I am a system supplier providing maternity IT systems

About the project

We are updating the Digital Maternity Record Standard to reflect improvements being made to maternity and perinatal care in line with the priorities outlined in NHS England’s three year delivery plan for maternity and neonatal services. Our work will help to standardise information in electronic maternity records so that they are shareable between different IT systems and healthcare providers.

Having access to the right information at the right time helps professionals make decisions for safer, more personalised care and supports people using services to manage their own information.

Our consultation period has now closed. The new draft standard will be published in May 2024.

Webinars for professionals

We have finished our series of webinars designed for professionals working in or with maternity services where we reviewed the updated standard. Each session focused on different aspects of maternity care:

  • Care planning, informed decision making, addressing health inequalities, continuity of carer, unplanned pregnancies, under 18s, MEWS/NEWTT2
  • Postnatal checks, perinatal pelvic floor health, smoking cessation
  • Maternal medicine
  • Fetal medicine
  • Fetal medicine, multiple births, bereavement and loss
  • Perinatal mental health

Our consultation period has now closed. The new draft standard will be published in May 2024.

Webinar for system suppliers

We’ve held a dedicated webinar for IT system suppliers to explore the updated Digital Maternity Record Standard in more detail. We also sent out a survey seeking your input. Our consultation period has now closed. The new draft standard will be published in May 2024.
