Dr Julian Costello represents the Royal College of General Practitioners, Health Informatics Group and is a member of the Joint General Practice Information Technology Committee (JGPITC).
He has more than 30 years’ experience as a General Medical Practitioner within the South Wales region and has been involved with medical informatics since introducing computers to his practice in 1988. Since then he has developed a strong interest in data standards, interoperability and data quality. He works within NHS Wales Informatics Service (NWIS) in their clinical team and has been involved with several interoperability projects. He has a particular interest in clinical terminologies and has been involved with Read Code developments and their progression to CTV3.
He is currently a member of the NHS-Digital Expert Reference Group working on the implementation and adoption of SNOMED-CT within the UK particularly within Primary Care. He has contributed to various aspects of clinical terminologies including decision support.
