Review of information needed in ambulance handover to A&E

Project examines record standards required to ensure safe, effective handover of patients from ambulance to accident and emergency services

Ambulance Transfer of Care to Emergency Departments (ED).

Review of information in ambulance handover to A&E Project examines record standards required to ensure safe, effective handover of patients from ambulance to accident and emergency services.

When transferring the care of a patient to a hospital emergency department, pertinent information from the ambulance record needs to be shared quickly to ensure that clinicians have the information they need to deliver safe and effective care. This information needs to be both recordable by ambulance professionals and useful to ED professionals.

The standard defines the structure and content of the transfer of care information from ambulance to ED and was developed in consultation with patients and healthcare professionals.

The PRSB has developed a standard that sets out what information should be recorded where, definitions of the content of the information and how it should be recorded. This work was completed in May 2016, and will be published, following endorsement by our members and professional bodies, in Autumn 2016.
